Microtraumatic surgery, a new discipline developed in surgical area at the end of the 20th century, is praised as a milestone in the history of development of surgery and one of the directions of development of surgery during the 21st century. As early as in 1991 Department of Microtraumatic Surgery of Ruijin Hospital successfully carried out the first case of cholecystomy by laparoscopy in East China region and subsequently successfully carried out domestically the first radical resection of rectal carcinoma and the first case of nephrectomy by laparoscopy and the first case of repair of tensionless hernia by laparoscopy and carried out quite early at home thyroidectomy by caritaryscope, radical resection of carcinoma of stomach by laparoscopy, splenectomy by laparoscopy, resection of appendix by laparoscopy, gynecologic operations by laparoscopy, chest surgical operations by thoracoscopy, urological operation by laparoscopy and all kinds of operations by endoscopy and took the lead at home in successfully carrying out pancreaticoduodenectomy (whipple operation) by laparoscopy. To date over 50,000 cases and over 40 kinds of operations by laparoscopy and endoscopy have been performed. In 1995 Ruijin Hospital took the lead at home in establishing “Microtraumatic Surgery Clinical and Scientific Research Training Center”, which is one of the microtraumatic surgery training centers in Asia-Pacific region approved by ELSA and has undertaken several dozen continuing education study courses of “microtraumatic surgery” at the State level, training hundreds of microtraumatic surgeons for the country and Asia-Pacific region and playing a pivotal role in popularization and promotion of the development of microtraumatic surgery.

In order to realize the program of building the Asian Medical Center, Bureau of Public Health and Bureau of Finance of Shanghai Municipality jointly plan to invest RMB 10 hundred million yuan within 5 years in building more than thirty clinical medical centers which will reach the first class level in Asia and in July 2002 “Shanghai Microtraumatic Surgery Clinical Medical Center” became one of the units for the first batch construction.

Shanghai Microtraumatic Surgery Clinical Medical Center is located in Ruijin Hospital Branch (Xujiahui Rd. 573), relying on the strong medical foundation of Ruijin Hospital with large-scale reconstruction of the former wards. At present the Center owns such 3 ward areas as Microtraumatic Choledochopancreatic Surgery, Microtraumatic Gastrointestinal Surgery and Microtraumatic Gynecology with 70 sickbeds. The wards are built according to the 3-star standard with such 4 grades as ordinary wards, standard wards, high-grade wards and luxury suites. All the operating rooms are first-class 100-level flow ones fitted with such endoscope appliances and instruments as electronic duodenoscope, electronic enteroscope, gastroscope and uteroscope besides the latest complete set of laparoscope appliances and instruments.

Prof. Zheng Minhua, director member of Center is our country’s famous expert of microtraumatic surgery. At the moment he is deputy director of Ruijin Hospital, council member of IFSES, managing council member of ELSA, director member of Group of Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgery of Chinese Surgical Association, leader of National Coordination Group of Microtraumatic Surgery of Carcinoma of Large Intestine and member of Hernia Association in Asia-Pacific Region etc.. The Center owns 1 director of Ph. D students, 2 directors of master students and 6 surgeons with their academic titles above visiting surgeons and is a key disciplinary point at the State, Municipal and University levels and also a disciplinary point for Ph. D. Members of the Center hold the posts of members of National Surgical Group of Laparoscopy, Biliary Tract, Hernia and Abdominal wall, members of Shanghai Thyroid Society, Shanghai Society of CDC Carcinoma of Large Intestine and National Tumor Society and members of National Anticancer Association and members of Shanghai Clinical Epidemiology Society. At the moment the types of surgical operations by laparoscopy carried out by the Center cover any surgical fields excepting liver transplantation and the number of operations by laparoscopy and endoscopy exceeds 3,000 cases each year. The clinical scientific research fruits of the Center have many times won prizes and the Center has supervised the compilation of 10 monographs on microtraumatic surgery, participated in the compilation of more than 30 works and published more than 200 papers in periodicals and journals at home and abroad. The Center has many times held large-scale national surgical conferences on laparoscopy and carried out extensive international cooperation and academic exchanges with the U.S., France, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other places and each year trains more than 60 surgeons for advanced studies both at home and abroad. The Center has a professional website for laparoscopy surgery, carrying out online operative demonstrations, continuing education, medical counseling and international cooperation on the net. The Center is in the lead at home and at an advanced level in Asia in respect of clinics, scientific research, teaching and academic exchanges etc. and is a discipline with a major impact both at home and abroad. The aim of the Center is: “Serving the patients wholeheartedly and providing the patients with the best therapeutic means that cause the least pain, the quickest recovery and conform to the developmental model of modern medicine using the most advanced conceptions, the highest technology and the most advanced instruments”.

The characteristic medical items of the Center are as follows.

Cholecystectomy by laparoscopy: minor trauma, quick recovery and the average of days for hospitalization is 3 days.
Treatment of gallstones by biscopy: That is, treatment of gallstone by “duodenoscope combined with laparoscope” or “laparoscope combined with biliary tract scope”. The patient is free of an abdominal operation.
　

Radical resection of carcinoma of colon and rectum: includes resection of right half colon by laparoscopy, resection of left half colon by laparoscopy, resection of transverse colon by laparoscopy, TME by laparoscopy, Miles by laparoscopy, Hartemann operation by laparoscopy and Parks by laparoscopy etc. with such good points as clear field of vision, little hemorrhage, thorough scope of debridement, minor trauma, quick recovery and fewer complications.
　

Thyroidectomy by cavitary scope: includes thyroidectomy by transmammary areola cavitary scope, thyroidectomy by transthoracic wall cavitary scope and thyroidectomy under clavicle without pneumoperitoneum etc.. After the operation the neck doesn’t have scars and is beautiful.
　

Repair of tensionless hernia by laparoscopy: includes TAPP by laparoscopy, TEP by laparoscopy, IPOM by laparoscopy etc. with low relapse rate, slight pain, and early recovery of physical strength.
