1． A brief introduction of the Institute
Divided into the two divisions of laboratory and clinics Shanghai Institute of Digestive Surgery is the basic and clinical research base of Department of General Surgery of Ruijin Hospital. The laboratory has Organ Transplantation Research Section, Digestive Pathology Research Section, Research Section of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Research Section of Immune Surgery and Chromatic Spectrum Section etc.. Clinically it has Gastrointestinal Tumor Group, Organ Transplantation Group, Biliary Tract and Pancreas Group, Microtraumatic Surgery Group and Surgical Group of Dangerous and Severe Diseases. The Institute has excellent academic organization and echelon of talents with its disciplinary academic level in the leading ranks at home and is one of the research centers of surgery at home.
　

2． A brief introduction of persons in charge of the Institute
Prof. Li Hongwei, director of the Institute, is deputy director of Surgical Society of Chinese Medical Association, member of Organ Transplantation Society of Chinese Medical Association, deputy leader of Disciplinary Group of Portal Hypertension of Surgical Society of Chinese Medical Association, director member of Surgical Society of Chinese Medical Association, Shanghai Branch, director member of Shanghai Society of General Surgery, honorary member of French Society of Surgery, overseas correspondent member of Surgical Academy of France, director of Ruijin Hospital and director of Ph.D students. Prof. Zhu Zhenggang, deputy director of the Institute, is deputy director of Medical School of Shanghai Jiaotong University, director of Department of General Surgery of Ruijin Hospital, deputy director of National Anti-Gastric Cancer Specialty Committee of China Anti-Cancer Association, member of Shanghai Surgical Society of Chinese Medical Association, member of Shanghai Society of General Surgery, director member of Gastrointestinal Tumor Specialty Committee of Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association, deputy Council director of Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association, deputy director of Shanghai Coordination Group of Gastric Cancer and director of Ph.D students.
　

3． Research conditions
Depending on and supported by the rich actual force of Ruijin Hospital and relying on Shanghai Education Committee and Shanghai Science and Technology Committee and Shanghai Jiaotong University (School of Medicine), this Institute has organized and integrated its manpower, material resources and financial resources with an area of laboratory of 1500m2, has built into an internationally first-class basic research base and around the disciplinary research direction owns equipments and techniques related to cellular biology, molecular biology, immunology and pathology.
　

4． Recent key-point research directions:
The main research directions are gastrointestinal tumor, biliary tract and pancreatic diseases, organ transplantation and microsurgery etc.. Its research of gastrointestinal tumor is to explore mechanism of precancerous lesion, development and carcinoma and an effective attempt to look for ways of blocking process of development so as to lower the incidence of gastrointestinal carcinoma. Research of pathogenesis of carcinoma, process of development, molecular control network, tumor immune feedbacks, identification of tumor antigen clone isolation and highly effective tumor vaccine is one of the key-point research directions in recent years. In respect of biliary tract and pancreatic diseases the Institute upholds the long strategic policy of research of prevention of cholelithiasis to reach the goal of first-grade prevention of cholelithiasis, i.e. prevention of formation of gallstones in high-risk population, collecting pedigree of cholelithiasis and studying the susceptible genes of cholelithiasis with molecular cellular genetics and carrying out the corresponding intervenient research. The Institute has carried out early diagnosis and treatment of tumor of biliary tract including cancer of biliary duct and carcinoma of gallbladder, striving to raise the rates of resection, radical resection and survival. Next is research of surgical treatment of high-position stenosis of biliary tract caused by operative injury including research of treatment of stent. The research is about the significance of related cellular factors in respect of pathogenesis, transformation and treatment of severe pancreatitis, deepened to the basis of molecular science of pathogenesis of severe pancreatitis. The purpose of carrying out research of infection factor of severe pancreatitis is early diagnosis, marking of its severity and improvement of therapies. In respect of organ transformation priorities are given to research of mechanism of rejection, treatment of anti-rejection and prevention of ischemia and injury of reperfusion, research of coordination and control effect of rebirth stimulating factors of liver cells and growth factors of epidermis. Transplantation immunity and anti-rejection have also been key-point research direction in recent years. Microsurgery takes enlargement of its scope of application as its main direction with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of tumor of digestive tract by laparoscopy and around this subject is conducted related research.
　

5． Situation of undertaking scientific research projects
This Discipline was approved as a place for Ph.D in 1984 and now is “211 Engineering” Construction Key Discipline, Shanghai Key Discipline, Shanghai Key Discipline of Medical leading Specialties, Shanghai Medical Key Discipline. It has successively undertaken or participated in State Key Projects for Tackling Major Problems of the 7th Five-Year Plan, 8th Five-Year Plan and 9th Five-Year Plan and successively obtained many times projects of State Natural Science Fund. At present it undertakes multiple scientific research projects of State Natural Science Fund, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality and basic research of “973” of Ministry of Science and Technology “Research of Withdrawal of Mitosis From Major Control Protein Network”, “863” major special project “Research of Genes Related to Gastric and Lung Cancer” and subproject of “Application of Biochips in Research of Control Network Related to Metastasis of Gastric Cancer”. It has won several Prizes of Scientific Research Fruits at State, Ministerial and Municipal levels, published over 10 academic books on special subjects in recent 5 years and publishes over 500 academic papers each year and admits over 10 Ph.D and master students each year.
　

6． Situation of winning prizes
In recent 5 years it has won a 1st Prize of State Natural Science nominated by Ministry of Education, a 1st Prize, a 2nd Prize and a 3rd Prize of Progress in Science and Technology of Shanghai Municipality, 2 2nd Prizes and a 3rd Prize of Progress in Medical Science and Technology of Shanghai Municipality etc.. It has won such titles as of Shanghai Excellent Disciplinary leading Person, Shanghai Venus, Venus Queen, Dawn Scholar Plan and Shanghai Medical leading Army Talent etc..
　

7． Situation of publishing monographs
In recent 5 years it has published over 400 academic papers in academic journals both at home and abroad, among which are 21 academic papers included in SCI and “Theory and Practice of Surgery” it sponsors is a senior academic journal for surgery at home to enter statistic sources.
