Located in the Laboratory of Respiration Department on the 10th floor of Building of Infectious Diseases and Lung Disease of Ruijin Hospital, Institute of Infectious Diseases and Respiratory Diseases of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Medical School of Jaotong University was established in November 2005.

2. A brief introduction of persons in charge of the Institute
1) Deng Weiwu (director)
Tenured professor of Ruijin Hospital, Chief physician of Respiratory Department, director of Ph.D students and our country’s famous expert of respiratory diseases, Prof. Deng is mainly engaged in the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques of diseases of respiratory system and clinical and scientific research work of bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive lung diseases and infectious diseases, skilled in diagnosis and treatment of difficult and complicated lung diseases, chest image diagnosis and identification diagnosis, having supervised the publication of several books of popular science.
2) Huang Shaoguang (deputy director)
Now holding the posts of professor, chief physician and director of Ph.D students of Respiratory Department of our Hospital, Prof. Huang is engaged in basic research and clinical work of asthma, lung cancer, COPD and infection of respiratory tract and breathing support of dangerous and severe diseases and is editorial member of several core journals and has supervised and participated in the compilation of more than 20 academic monographs.
3) Wan Huanying (deputy director)
Now holding the posts of director of Respiration Department, director of Teaching and Research Section of Respiration Department, Chief physician, professor and director of Ph.D students of our Hospital, Prof. Wan is mainly engaged in clinical and basic research of diseases of respiratory system. As a person in charge of projects Prof. Wan undertakes several research projects in respect of asthma and COPD of Shanghai Natural Science Fund and participates in several clinical pharmacological projects of State Natural Science Fund, Ministry of Public Health and internationally united projects of this kind.
4) Xie Qing (deputy director)
Now holding the posts of director of Infection Department, director of Teaching and Research Section of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology, chief physician, professor and director of Ph.D students of our Hospital, Prof. Xie is mainly engaged in clinical and basic research of epidemiology esp. viral hepatitis.
At present Prof. Xie is holding the posts of member of Infectious Diseases and Parasitic Diseases Society of National Chinese Medical Association, member of National Artificial Liver Academic Group and member of Shanghai Infectious Diseases Sub-Committee and its secretary (a concurrent post) etc..
5) Zhang Xinxin (deputy director)
Now holding the posts of chief physician, professor, director of Ph.D students and master students, director of Clinical Virus Research Section, deputy director of Infection Department and deputy director of Infectious Disease and Parasitic Disease Teaching and Research Section, Prof. Zhang is engaged in clinical therapeutic and scientific research work of infectious diseases. As a person in charge of projects Prof. Zhang has successively undertaken and accomplished several research projects of State Natural Science Fund and Shanghai Natural Science Fund.

The daily routine work of the Laboratory is concretely managed by the academic secretary of the Institute with one lab technician participating in part of daily routine work and several Ph.D and master students engaging themselves in related project research under their directors’ guidance according to the arrangement of the academic secretary.

4. Recent key research directions:
With diagnosis and research of viruses of respiratory tract and hepatic viruses as the platform on the basis of the previous research of virology, Infection Department and Respiration Department combinedly carry out comprehensive research of viruses of respiratory tract. Target for the recent period: Establishing the system, straightening and smoothing out relationships to ensure that all work be carried out effectively and smoothly. Continuing and developing all research projects of the Laboratory and clarifying and detailing all plans of the newly-established Laboratory. Consolidating and developing the cooperative ties with foreign research institutions already in existence and exploring and establishing new cooperative partners and cooperative projects.

1) Infection Department
At the State level:
（1） Research of inhibiting effect of ER emergency intervention and induction of hepatocyte apoptosis by micromolecule interference of RAN
（2） Gene vaccine research of identification of epitope by monoclone antibody 4E10 in HIV enveloped protein Gp41
（3） Research of epitope and function of hepatitis C virus F proteic cell
（4） Research of expression map of severe viral infection specific type I interferon
2) Respiration Department
At the State level:
（1） Research of pathogenesis of inflammation of muscular change of superior air passage of rat caused by chronic interrupted lack of oxygen and its related therapeutic strategy
（2） Research of infection of immune susceptible gene of the Chinese by non-tuberculous mycobacteria
（3） Interference of RNA expressed by co-stimulating molecules CD86 and its application in asthma
（4） Research of the role of transcription factor Aiolog in attack of asthma
（5） Dynamic research of drug-resistant genotype of verdigris pseudomonas in the course of application of antibiotics in Respiration Department
　

6. Situation of winning prizes
Infection Department:
It won a 2nd Prize of Science and Technology of Ministry of Public Health, a 3rd Prize of Science and Technology of Ministry of Public Health, a Prize of commendation of four Commissions and one Ministry, 2nd and 3rd Prizes of Progress in Science and Technology of Shanghai Municipality and several times participated in exchanges at international academic conferences.
Respiration Department:
It won 2nd and 3rd Prizes of Progress in Science and Technology of Shanghai Municipality, a 2nd Prize of Medical Science of Shanghai Municipality, Prizes for Excellent Papers of Chinese Medical Association.
