Department of Angiocardiopathy of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Second Medical University was established in 1954 by such famous professors as Prof. Tao Qing and Prof. Gong Lanshen, our country’s famous experts of angiocardiopathy and continuously developed by such professors as Prof. Qi Wenhang and Prof. Shen Weifeng, enjoying considerable celebrity both at home and abroad. In 1996 it became the key discipline of Shanghai Education Commission and in 1999 was approved as Cardiovascular Clinical Pharmacological Base of Ministry of Public Health. In the past 3 years it has been in charge of or participated in 17 items of international and domestic multicentre clinical research. It is the training base of Shanghai Heart Intervention Quality Control Center, Training Center of Special Doctors of Cardioelectric Physiology and Pacing of Chinese Medical Association-Training Base of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Second Medical University.

This Discipline is a conferring point for the first batch of Ph.D designated by State Education Commission. Now it has 3 directors of Ph. D. students and 7 directors of master students. Department of Angiocardiopathy now has 34 physicians, among whom are 1 tenured professor, 8 professors, 10 associate professors and 11 visiting physicians. Among them are 14 Ph.D, 14 masters, 5 senior technicians and 36 nursing staff members.

Department of Angiocardiopathy of Ruijin Hospital includes such divisions as of clinics, intervention of coronary heart disease, pacing and cardioelectric physiology, cardiac ultrasonography, electrocardiogram, magnetocardiogram, cardiovascular biochemistry and molecular biology laboratory and clinical pharmacology base of Ministry of Public Health. It owns 100 sickbeds for the specialty of cardiopathy, each year has 85,000 person-times for special O.P.D. service and 2,300 person-times for being discharged from hospital with a complete variety of diseases, ensuring the source of patients for carrying out drug clinical experiments. It owns almost all the cardiovascular clinical instruments and apparatuses available both at home and abroad and can carry out the diagnoses and therapies for all kinds of adult cardiovascular diseases. Our Department is in the lead at home in intervention therapy, electro-physiological examination, radio frequency ablation, pacemaker installation, heart failure difficult to cure and the individualized treatment of hyperlipemia and the diagnoses and treatment of other complex and difficult cardiovascular diseases. Each year the Department carries out over 1,500 cases of such intervention diagnoses and treatment as of PTCA and support and mitral valve saccule dilation and is one of the leading departments of this kind nationwide. Each year it fulfils the installation of over 200 pacemakers and over 200 cases of radio frequency ablation and is at the advanced level nationwide or in the lead citywide in carrying out vascular ultrasonography and examination of complex cardiac diseases.

In the recent 5 years it has established nearly 20 research items and obtained 5.888 million yuan as research expenditure. Each year the Department takes care of nearly 400 students in respect of teaching and gives lessons amounting to nearly 400 class hours. Now it has 18 graduate students and has supervised the publication of 12 monographs.
