Established in 1958 Shanghai Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics is a medical institute at the Municipal level of combination of Chinese and Western medicine with medical, scientific research and teaching combined in one entity including orthopedics, traumatology and related basic research laboratories.
The Institute around the subject of bone and articular injuries, while undertaking large amounts of clinical treatment, teaching and the State continuing reeducation courses, with pathogenesis and prevention and treatment of bone and articular injuries as key research content, has published nearly 1,000 papers, over 70 books and won over 30 prizes at Provincial, Ministerial levels and above for its research results in respect of “Repair and Reconstruction of Bone and Joints”, “Recovery and Directional Control of Expression of Phenotype of Fibroblastic Osteogenesis”, “Biologic Mechanism of Pathogenesis of Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis and their Strategies”, “Control of Differentiation and Induction of Bone Cell”, “Osteogenesis and Osteoplasty and Prevention and Treatment of Major Bone Diseases” and “Bone and Articular Tissue Engineering Techniques”. The Institute grasps the developmental tendency of related research fields both at home and abroad, has formed its own stable, distinctive and creative research direction, successively brought up and gathered a batch of well-known scholars both at home and abroad and formed its own academic schools. As one of the first batch of degree-conferring places for Ph.D of the specialty of orthopedics, it has trained a great batch of professional technical talents, some of whom have become well-known scholars, disciplinary leading persons and academic mainstay both at home and abroad.
　

The Institute is now a key construction discipline of the State “211 Engineering”, State Drug Clinical (Orthopedics) Research Base, Demonstrative Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine for General Hospitals in Shanghai, Shanghai Bone Fracture Therapeutic Coordination Center of Combination of Chinese and Western Medicine, Key Laboratory for Prevention and Treatment of Bone and Articular Injuries of Combination of Chinese and Western Medicine of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission and Highest Laboratory for Control of Differentiation and Induction of Bone Cells of State Administrative Bureau of TCM and Pharmacology. It has established close ties for cooperation in projects, personnel exchange and regular academic exchanges with related research institutions both at home and abroad. It has now 10 professors, among whom are 3 directors of Ph.D students and 11 associate professors, among whom are 7 directors of master students. In the field of research of traumatology and orthopedics it has formed a special technical platform with distinctive features and systematic and stable research direction with distinctive features. The creative views it studied and put forward plays a promotive and leading role in development of the Discipline. The Institute has become one of the research institutions of clinics and basic theories with considerable influences at home.
